Understanding nervous system regulation: The key to wellbeing!

There is big hype about nervous system regulation. But have you taken the time to truly understand what this mean. The nervous system is a complex network that controls every aspect of our being, from basic body functions to intricate emotional responses. This refers to the processes that maintain this systems balance.

WHAT IS NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION?


The nervous system is divided into two main parts! The CNS- central nervous system which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the PNS- peripheral nervous system- which connects the CNS to the rest of the body. Within the PSN the autonomic nervous system ANS, plays a key part in regulation. The ANS is compromised of the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system.

Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): Often known as "fight or flight" prepares the body to respond to stress or danger by increasing heart rate, releasing adrenaline and diverting blood flow to essential muscles and systems.


Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): Known as "rest and digest" promotes rest, relaxation, digestion and comes from a place of safety. It slows the heart rate down.


Nervous system regulation involves the balance between these two branches, allowing us to respond appropriately to various stimuli.

  • Improved Physical Health: Proper regulation aids in maintaining cardiovascular health, digestion, and immune function.

  • Better Sleep: A balanced nervous system promotes restful sleep, crucial for recovery and overall health.

Conversely, dysregulation can lead to chronic stress, anxiety disorders, digestive issues, and other health problems.
